The relay is what makes a congress with less common languages possible. It lets one interpreter take another's output as their input: if nobody works Finnish into Spanish, Finnish goes into English and English into Spanish.
The mute button cuts the microphone without cutting the monitoring: it is what the interpreter uses to cough or take a drink without the room hearing it.
