A video scoreboard is a full LED screen doing the job of a scoreboard: the same square metres carry the score during the match, a replay of a passage of play, sponsor advertising, and the time of day when the hall is empty. A digit scoreboard only does the first of those.
That is the difference from a conventional scoreboard: the wall space pays for itself three times over — result, content and sponsorship — instead of once.

When there is no match on
It can be set to show the time or the temperature, or to play video, and work as an information screen for the venue. It does not sit switched off for half the week.
The pixel pitch sets how close you need to be for it to read well: 5 mm is sized for the usual distance of a sports hall stand or an indoor football pitch. For greater distances it is better to go up in size than in resolution.
