Three AI tracking cameras, multicamera vision mixing and a large LED screen for a tournament running several tatami mats at once in Nerja.
A karate tournament in Nerja, with several tatami mats competing at the same time. Multi-area competitions are the awkward kind to broadcast: the action is never in one place, and cutting between mats has to be quick enough that nobody at home misses a scoring point.
How it was set up
- Three robotic cameras with AI tracking, following the competitor without an operator on every mat
- Blackmagic ATEM Extreme ISO for live multicamera production, with several feeds going out at once
- A large-format LED screen showing the highlights to the crowd in the hall as they happen
- A commentary position for live narration over the broadcast
Before the day itself we walked the venue, checked the internet connection and ran a full rehearsal. On a live broadcast, the connection is what fails, and it always fails at the worst possible moment — which is why it gets tested first, not last.
Lighting and sound
Sports halls are lit for competing, not for broadcasting. Lighting and audio were adjusted for the cameras, and the stream was monitored throughout, with the audience following along live.
